Selling Online Is No Different To Selling In The High Street
The title of this article may seem a little strange to some but I would like to focus on the importance of online selling and how if done correctly can be very successful but at the same time doesn’t differ too much from high street retailing.
There has been a dramatic rise in the amount of online sellers in recent years so many are finding what was once a very successful venture has now become one which is very competitive with selling becoming progressively harder.
Many e-commerce websites were set up with the owners thinking that by just having a presence online would be enough to see sales flying in, this may have been true in the early days of the internet when e-commerce websites were few and far between however now it is just not enough to ensure a steady flow of traffic and sales.
You have to treat selling online in the same manner you would if you owned a high street shop, if you just owned a shop and did not advertise or set up special offers and window displays you would probably struggle to sell. This is of course very much like a website, it has to be advertised and promoted in as many formats as possible.
There are many ways to promote and advertise your website:
Search engine optimisation – This is very much like having a good high street location, people can easily find you.
It is important to be as visible as possible within the search engine result pages (SERP’s). This way people who search for your industry or product will find you as a retailer.
Search Engine Marketing – You need to promote your website and get as many people interested as possible, this can be in the form of banner advertising, pay per click advertising on search engines and social networking websites. This is a more expensive option but at the same time very effective when managed correctly.
Social media – This is another form of online marketing.
Adding videos and images to websites such as Youtube and Flickr help to increase customer awareness of your brand. Social networking websites such as Facebook and Myspace help to quickly get offers and news about the internet. Micro blogging such as Twitter is also very effective, letting users quickly know what is going on currently such as a sale.
Television and Paper advertising – You do not have to solely advertise your online business online, things such as television advertising and newspaper adverts can be very effective indeed. Depending on the advertising budget you have really depends on the avenues of off-line advertising you use. Television is obviously expensive especially advertising within key areas (highly viewed shows) but can dramatically increase traffic.
